MONOPOLY GAMES: THE STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE FIFTH GRADERS’ PARTICIPATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS

(Yogyakarta 28/02) Vara Juniszha one of English Language Department of UMBY students has sucessfully diseminated her case today on February 28, 2023. The examiners of this thesis defense were Dangin, S.Pd.,M.Hum., Restu Arini, S.Pd.,M.Pd., Valentina Dyah Arum Sari, S.Pd., M.Hum . Her study focused on speaking skills development through the use of monopoly games. This method has been deemed to be effective to reinforce and support students to express thoughts, opinions, feelings, and ideas. By acquiring the speaking skills, the students can express ideas fluently with the correct choice of words orally.
This study aimed to reveal the improvement of fifth graders' participation in learning English speaking skills through monopoly games. The study applied a mixed-method research approach with questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists as the instrument used. This research applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was carried out on 2 cycles involving 20 students. They were consisting of 12 males and 8 females in the fifth-grade Elementary School in the Academic Year 2022/2023. The participation of students was improved seeing from the observation results. The data obtained through questionnaires revealed the positive responses regarding the implementation of the monopoly games. 90,01% of students perceived that they had a good participation when experiencing learning speaking through monopoly games. Moreover, the result finding indicated that the monopoly games could improve students' participation in learning English student speaking skills. She did this work well under the supervision of Ms. Valentina Dyah Arum Sari, S.Pd., M.Hum.
