Students from Kampung Bambu Jetis English Nature School Learn Traffic Signs with Policewoman

Yogyakarta, July 15, 2025 – An educational session on traffic signs led by IPDA Christi Hadiastuti, SPd, and Babinkamtibmas of Sumberrejo Village, AIPTU Muhyudi, from the Tempel Police Station, marked the closing ceremony of the English Language School in Bamboo Village Jetis, Sumberrejo, Tempel, Sleman on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

IPDA Christi stated in her address to the students and parents, “I commend this school’s initiative for introducing the purpose and function of traffic signs, which also instills discipline from a young age. Discipline fosters positive character, creativity, a sense of responsibility, and productivity in children as they pursue their aspirations.” Meanwhile, Bhabinkamtibmas of Sumberrejo Village, Aiptu Muhyudi, explained using visual aids that there are three types of traffic signs: prohibition signs marked with red-colored images or letters, the second type is warning signs marked with yellow-colored images or letters, and the third type is command signs marked with blue-colored images or letters.

Meanwhile, Valentina Dyah Arum Sari, SPd, MHum, a lecturer in the English Language Education program (PBI) and coordinator of the nature school tutors, stated, “This English nature school in Bamboo Village Jetis is a village under the guidance of the Faculty of Education and Educational Sciences (FKIP) at Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta. The school meetings are held every June -July for five face-to-face sessions. The number of students increases each year; in 2023, there were 63 students, in 2024 there were 74 students, and for 2025, there are 76 students, consisting of 20 preschoolers, 37 elementary school students in grades 1-3, 16 elementary school students in grades 4-6, and 3 middle school students.”

Dyah Arum added that the curriculum used in this nature school is nature literacy, where children are encouraged to dance, sing, and explore their surroundings to directly experience what they encounter, learn about themselves and their families, recognize various types of domestic animals, understand public buildings and facilities, and be able to name household items in English. Additionally, the children are also equipped with other skills such as waste sorting, making compost from organic waste (composting), and gardening skills.

Dukuh Jetis Sumaryanto explained, “As the village head, I would like to express my gratitude to the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FKIP) of Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta for establishing the English-language nature school in Jetis Village. This school is one of 18 active community groups in the village, thereby allowing students to learn more freely and delve deeper into community activities and potential such as livestock farming, fisheries, KWT, and others as part of the curriculum. I hope this school can continue to improve in terms of quality and facilities, benefiting its students, especially since the 2027 school curriculum will make English lessons mandatory starting from third grade elementary school,” he explained.
